Saudi Arabia Removes Palestine from School Textbook Maps

In a move that has garnered significant attention and controversy, Saudi Arabia's latest school curriculum for the 2023-2024 academic year has reportedly excluded the name of Palestine from most of its textbook maps.  This change was brought to light by a recent report from IMPACT-se, a pro-Israeli think tank dedicated to monitoring peace and cultural tolerance in educational materials. IMPACT-se's comprehensive review of 371 textbooks from the current academic year reveals notable changes compared to previous editions.  One of the most striking modifications is the absence of Palestine on the maps featured in the social and national studies textbooks.  This is a marked departure from the 2022 textbooks, which clearly labeled Palestine. The report highlights that 21 examples previously identified as problematic have been removed. These include a high school social studies textbook that contained a chapter on the Palestinian cause, which was criticized for not adhering to UNESCO
